Acute pancreatitis is when your pancreas suddenly becomes inflamed – this is a very serious condition.

The cause of pancreatitis is when some of its own enzymes try to digest the pancreas.

The most common causes are:

- Gallstones

- Binge drinking or chronic excessive alcohol intake

Symptoms may include:

- Sudden severe abdominal pain

- Nausea

- Vomiting

Treatment:

You will have to be hospitalised.

Your doctor will give you intravenous antibiotics, pain control and medication for nausea.

You will not be allowed to eat or take fluids as this stimulates the pancreas to create more of the same enzymes that is busy digesting it. You will receive fluid and nutrition through your IV line.

Complications:

Most people recover within 7 to 10 days; although complications may develop that will require a longer stay.

This is a serious condition. Although most people make a quick recovery, in some cases this can result in life-threatening complications.

Consult with your doctor if you have any symptoms you are concerned about.
