A DVT is a blood clot that forms in one of your deep veins. Usually located in the calf or the thigh.

 

Signs and symptoms:

Pain, swelling and redness in surrounding area.

 

Risk factors:

- History of DVT’s

- Family history of blood clots

- Medical conditions like heart failure, irregular heart rate, cancer

- Immobility – sitting for a long time e.g. flying, lying in bed after an operation

- Obesity

- Smoking

 

Treating:

You will need to take medication that prevents clotting. These are prescribed by your doctor.

Compression stockings help to prevent complications and improve the symptoms of a DVT.
