A Goitre is an abnormal swelling of the thyroid.
The thyroid gland is a small butterfly-shaped gland in the neck, just in front of the windpipe. It produces hormones which helps to regulate the body’s metabolism.
Most goiters are non-cancerous, although 1 out of 20 cases may be a sign of thyroid cancer.
Causes:
- An over- or underactive thyroid gland
- Pregnancy
- Iodine deficiency (mineral found in Milk and fish)
Treatment:
If the cause is established, goiter is treated accordingly eg. Hormone replacement, dietary supplements and in most severe cases surgery.
