Mastitis is common in breastfeeding woman although it can be diagnosed in all woman.

It mostly affect one breast.  It is usually accompanied by fever and flu-like symptoms, aches and chills.

It can be caused by an infection (bacteria entering a cracked nipple), or by the blockage of the milk ducts.

 

Treatment:

Mastitis is treated with antibiotics, pain medication and rest.

If you are breastfeeding you might have to re-evaluate your method – adjust your technique, make sure the baby is properly attached to your breast.  More frequent feeds, or expression in between feeds are advised.

Although your breasts are painful, it is encourage to continue feeding despite your mastitis.  This can remove any blocked milk from your breast and help to resolve the symptoms sooner.

Breastmilk from a breast with mastitis is safe to drink.
