



Cellulitis is a common skin infection caused by bacteria. The skin will become red, hot, irritated, swollen and painful. In severe cases, you might experience fever, swollen glands and body aches.
Causes and risk factors:
This is usually caused by a bacteria that enters your skin. The most common bacteria is known as Staphylococcus.
- Cracks/wounds of the skin
- History of peripheral vascular disease
- Bites or stings
- Ulcers, especially in diabetic patients
- Use of medication that suppress the immune system – example cortisones
- Surgical wounds
Treatment includes:
- Antibiotics, either by mouth or in the vein
- Pain medication and anti-inflammatories
- You might need to have an incision and drainage – draining an underlying abscess
- Rest
