Breast lumps are very common and can be caused by a number of things.
Remember; all lumps are not breast cancer, but should still be checked by your doctor as soon as possible.
There are many types of non-cancerous breast lumps. They can vary in size, texture and appearance. Mostly these are caused by hormonal changes eg your menstrual cycle.
Some types include:
- Cysts – fluid filled lump
- Fibroadenoma – solid breast lump
- Breast abscess – pus filled cavity
- Damage to fatty tissue - necrosis
When to seek professional advise:
- A lump or thickened area in either breast
- Nipple discharge
- Swelling/lump in armpits
- Change in size/shape of breasts
- Dimpling on the skin
- Rash
- Change in appearance
- Painful breasts
Treatment:
Treatment depends on the cause of a lump. If it is a cyst or an abscess, it might need drainage.
You might receive some pain medication or antibiotics.
If the lump is very large or painful, it can be surgically removed
Please be breast aware. Know your breasts to help you notice changes as soon as possible.
