Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder. Usually it is caused by a gallstone that gets trapped in one of the gallbladder ducts.

Signs and symptoms:

- A severe pain in the right upper abdomen

- High fever

Treatment:

At first cholecystitis can be treated with antibiotics. Surgery to remove the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) is then often not needed.
